When you visit a state that is practically surrounded by the ocean, chances are you will find some great beaches. Unfortunately, not all beaches are equal. But don"t worry! We are not the only experts to take you to your destination; we also know how to choose them! Below is our list of the top five beaches in South Florida and why you should make them a travel destination for your next trip.

Lummus Park Beach

Lauded as one of the most popular destinations in Miami, Lummus Park Beach has long been a popular location for filming. (An event that happens often, for all movie and TV fans out there). The beach itself is part of the 74-hectare park, with extensive paved paths and fun things like terraces and volleyball courts. There is also a lot to do for the children.

Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park

In addition to all the usual water related activities, this beach is also full of history. Located on the southern part of Key Biscayne Island, it is known both as part of the Underground Railroad and as the home of Cape Florida Light, a lighthouse built in 1825 that still stands there.

Virginia Key Beach

Virginia Key Beach Park celebrates its 70th birthday in 2015 and has a long history, yet surprisingly focused on natural and historical preservation. Although minutes from all that Miami has to offer, the Park is a unique ecological haven. The island of Virginia Key is also home to the hugely popular Miami Sea aquarium, so you can know the native marine life is up close and personal without being eaten.

John U. Lloyd Beach State Park

This beach is truly a paradise for water sports enthusiasts and offers opportunities for various types of boating, fishing and swimming. Canoes and kayaks are also for rent, in case you like to sail but don"t fit on the plane. Divers and snorkelers can enjoy the Dania Beach Erojacks, a popular reef in that area. This park is also home to Whiskey Creek, a small cove that is used as a shrine manatee.

Ft. Lauderdale beach

Home to the Great American Beach Party, an annual festival that begins the summer with live music and lots of activities for the whole family, Ft. Lauderdale Beach is what you could call a metropolitan beach. In other words, sun, surfing, good food, spas, music, shopping; all outside the front door of your hotel.
